Ought To

Use of Ought to:

Ought is also a modal verb. The same form ought is used for Present and Future tenses. It is also used in Past when preceded by a verb in Past tense or followed by a Perfect infinitive, Ought is always followed by full infinitive to : e.g.

   (a) I ought to worite to her todaytomorrow.

   (b) I knew, I ought to write to her.

The negative form of ought - ought not oughtn't and the interrogative form - ought I / he / you? etc. Negative interrogative form - ought I not oughtn't I? etc.

1. Ought is used for denoting advice, moral obligation, duty,e.g

    (a) You ought to consult a physician.            (adive)

    (b) We ought to respect our parents.           (moral duty)

    (c) We ought to help our friends.                (moral obligation)

2. The use of ought in perfect denotes an unfulfilled obligation or an action that didnt take place, e.g.

    (a) She ought have invited him to the function.   (but she didnt invite him)

    (b) He ought to have helped him in that matter.  (but he didnt help him)

3. It is generally assumed that ought to and should have similar uses. But in formal notices or for information etc, should (but not ought) is used. e.g.

    (a) Students should be prepared to donate the blood.

    (b) Travellers should be in possession of the following documents.

We cant use ought in above sentences.
